Joan Southgate is an activist and community organizer. In 2002, she walked 500 miles on the Underground Railroad routes in Ohio to honor the freedom seekers and the Black and White abolitionists who helped them escape to Canada. In 2003, she founded Restore Cleveland Hope to save the Cozad-Bates House on University Circle. And by 2021, the Underground Railroad Interpretive Center at the Cozad-Bates House opened to the public.
I met Joan in the summer of 2024 and discovered our shared passion for telling the cooperative stories of heroes, Black and White, who worked together for the common good of our country. She became my mentor.
Yocum African American History Association (YAAHA) is excited to share the stories of cooperation through historical storytelling. One American Story: The Joan Southgate Scavenger Hunt of Heroes is a facilitated experience built around a simple idea: the most meaningful progress in American history happened when people worked together.
The same is true today in our classrooms, hospitals, and organizations.
In the spirit of activist Joan Southgate, we uncover evidence, share stories of cooperation, and focus on discovery and meaning to show that ordinary people, of all races, changed history. This customizable guided scavenger hunt is designed to meet your needs, time constraints, and industry interests and can be given as an interactive PowerPoint. Please contact us for details on scheduling.
If you are looking for a meaningful way to bring people together around purpose, history, and teamwork, One American Story offers shared discovery and collaborative learning.
