Nancy Randolph Teaches History

Aug 12, 2022

Nancy Randolph has been an educator at Victory Christian Academy (VCA) in the heart of the inner city of Orlando, Florida, for more than 15 years. She is a civic leader who helps children become active citizens while standing on their faith in God.

Nancy teaches American and World History, Bible, Grammar, Speech, and Drama to her 7th to 12th-grade students. Through Nancy’s research and years of teaching, she has perfected how to encourage students to think critically when studying history by helping them find the truth through personal research. A group discussion follows this research. This gifted teacher believes that ignorance keeps us in the dark along with emotional responses rather than facts that prevent us from learning and knowing the truth.

How does Nancy cope with the incorrect information within history? First, she says, “We pray that hearts will change with the new information.” Next, students learn by researching. For example, they explore information about the Founding Fathers and leaders such as Frederick Douglass; they study what the Constitution contains and issues like the three-fifths clause, which many people misrepresent. Knowing black history empowers students and helps give students the information to stand on the shoulders of their ancestors.

Nancy’s most cherished lessons are from the American History Live Museum presentations created by her classes. Students choose a leader or historical period to research and prepare a short presentation in costume. Students must choose a significant leader or century and cannot choose an athlete or celebrity. The live museum changes lives by teaching students to love their country and to appreciate what their ancestors have achieved throughout history. This live museum tears the audience members’ eyes because, so few know this true history. Nancy is heading the next generation to higher standards through education.

VCA is highly successful because they set the expectations for their students, require a dress code, and provide a solid Christian foundation with daily prayer for the students and the alums. The staff plant seeds and teach students as if it is the last time they will ever see them. VCA proudly shares that 81.3% of VCA graduates go on to college.
